Peter tiptoes carefully toward the door as he tries to contain his excitement. Images of Jane screaming in surprise runs through his head. The more he thinks about it, the harder his heart thumps. He could feel his pulse beating rhythmically throughout his entire body.
As he approaches the door, he checks his watch. “9 p.m.,” the watch reads.
“Jane should be home by now,” Peter thought. He takes a deep breath and raises his finger to the door bell. Ding dong! the bell rings. Peter grabs the bouquet of flowers in his hands almost bursting in excitement and waits. Nothing happens. He rings the bell again. Nothing happens. “That couldn’t be,” Peter thought. No matter how much work she’s got, Jane always gets home by 8 p.m. He decides to call Jane.
“Hey honey,” Jane answers.
“Hey babe, where are you?” Peter asks as casually as he can.
“O-oh,” Jane stutters and nervously replies, “I’m home! What’s up?”
Peter feels a huge wave of disappointment washing up on him. “Nothing. I just wanted to hear your voice.”
“Where are you?” asks Jane.
“Uh… I’m home, too,” Peter replies, tons of questions flashing through his mind.
Why would Jane lie to me? Is she seeing someone else? Is she cheating on me? I don’t want to lose her…
Peter is crushed. Not being able to hold himself up anymore, he collapses to the ground sobbing.
“Hello?” Jane calls out to no response.
Jane was confused but at the same time excited at what is about to happen. She hangs up the phone and approaches the gate in front of her. She takes a deep breath and rings the doorbell. Ding dong! the bell rings. Jane holds the proposal ring tightly in her hands almost bursting into tears at the thought of her surprise proposal. But nothing happens. She rings the bell again. Still, nothing happens. “That couldn’t be,” Jane thought. “Peter just said he’s home.” Doubts begin rushing into Jane’s mind.
