Fuji-Q Highland Entrance to Become Free

Yamanashi amusement park Fuji-Q Highland, famous for its frightening roller-coasters and haunted mansion, announced that entrance to the park will be free starting mid-July.

The current entrance fee costs 900 yen for children from 3 to 11 years of age, and 1,500 yen for those 12 and above. In a world where entrance tickets to amusement parks are getting more and more expensive, this is a very bold move taken by the management of Fuji-Q Highland.

During an interview session, the person in charge revealed the reason behind this decision.

While entrance to the park will be free, the company is considering raising ride fees by 2 to 2.5 times. It is worthy to note here that despite the seemingly low entrance price, getting on/into attractions costs extra, so the entrance fee is really what it is for i.e. entrance.

If you look at the official website, famous rides such as Dododonpa, Takabisha, Fujiyama, Eejanaika currently costs 1,000 yen per ride. And that could increase to 2,000-2,500 yen. Price for Thomas Land, targeted at children, may also see an increase in price. This means, the more you play, the more expensive it gets. The good news is, price for the free pass that allows you to take unlimited number of rides is expected to remain the same.
For your reference, while there are different prices for a variety of type of free passes, the standard ticket costs 4,300 yen for children 3 to 11, 5,200 yen for 12 to 17, and 5,700 yen for 18 and above. There are discounts if you purchase the e-ticket online in advance.
It appears that this decision is to attract visitors to go in just to dine or purchase souvenirs, and the likeliest target of them all would be visitors to Mt. Fuji. I haven’t been there myself though, and this seems to be good advertising to remind people like me about the park.
