Dirty Shoes and I went to catch Miyavi’s solo live a few nights ago. Long-time visual kei fans probably know him as the guitarist from Dué le quartz. Others might know him from Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken.
I started listening to visual kei bands when I was 17 and knew of Dué le quartz and Miyavi, but I’ve never heard any of the band’s songs. Even after Miyavi went solo, it never crossed my mind to give his songs a listen. It was not until a few months ago, D’s friend, a maniac fan of hide of X Japan and a fan of several other bands, told D about the Miyavi concert that got me interested. Reason being, the poster suggested Miyavi was going to do a cover of hide’s songs. But I later found out that he was only going to cover 1 of his songs i.e. Pink Spider.
Since we got the tickets, might as well give his music a try right?
Before attending the concert, I searched for his cover of the song online and didn’t like it. At the concert, that was the only song I knew and I didn’t really enjoy the rest of the songs since I’ve never heard of them. More importantly, his style of music isn’t something I like, but it is undeniable that he is good at the guitar. After all, he was once a member of S.K.I.N., and if one is selected to be among the likes of Yoshiki, Sugizo, and Gackt, one must be really good.
I’m not certain if Miyavi can play other instruments, but all other members of S.K.I.N do. Yoshiki plays the drums and piano, Sugizo plays the guitar and the violin, and Gackt plays the guitar, violin and piano.
I love instruments and wish I could play the guitar as well. But unfortunately, my passion wasn’t enough to make me place more effort in practising. Either that or I just wasn’t patient enough to keep going.
Sometimes I wonder what it feels like to be at the top of the music game, when you know it so well you can play any song just by listening to it. If a genie grants me the wish to be good at anything at all, I would likely wish to be a good musician. Perhaps that’s why I admire the good musicians so much.
