Discover the beauty and wonder of the Tohoku region on our 14-day Discover Tohoku tour, featuring the Sendai Aoba Festival! We tour Tohoku in one of its most captivating seasons - the full beauty of springtime makes the landscape lush and green, when the parks and gardens are full of flowers! The itinerary includes the very best destinations of the region including Nikko, Aizu- Wakamatsu, Sado Island, Mount Haguro, Yamadera, Matsushima Bay, Mito, and Sendai.

By far the chief highlight of this tour is the Sendai Aoba Festival, which takes place in late May and celebrates the history and local culture of the city of Sendai. During the "Yoi-Matsuri", you will be able to learn the festival's "suzume-odori", or Sparrow Dance: a dance where the waving of small fans is accompanied by tiny hops like a sparrow. The next day includes the Yamaboko Procession - a parade of incredible wooden floats connected with Sendai and its founder, the samurai hero Date Masamune. During the festival, you will have the chance to wander and try different delicious festival foods as well.

Our carefully crafted itinerary showcases the rich cultural experiences of Tohoku and the nearby areas. This includes a trip to Shonai and the Three Sacred Mountains of Dewa, where we travel to the shrine on Mount Haguro to learn the customs of the Yamabushi "mountain monks", and eat a vegetarian dinner of "shojin ryori". You can enjoy the song of the boatmen as you take a cruise down the Mogami River. You will stay three days and two nights on Sado Island, where you will explore the island's abandoned gold mine and nearby refinement facility, visit the old shipbuilding village of Shukunegi, see the crested ibis or "toki" birds at the Toki no Mura Park, play the Taiko Drums, and take a ride in a large wooden washtub!

We also showcase some of the region's most breathtaking locations. Admire the tended groves of bonsai trees at the Omiya Bonsai Village, the Great Wisteria of Ashikaga Flower Park, and the endless sea of baby blue eyes at Hitachi Seaside Park. You will also be captivated by spectacular Kegon Falls, the rocky cliffs of Senkakuwan Bay, and the picturesque highland landscape along the Bandaisan Gold Line.

Join our Discover Tohoku group tour, and experience the charming cultural experiences and majestic splendor of this less-explored region of Japan. Transportation on this tour is facilitated by one of our comfortable private coaches, and you will be accompanied by one of our professional and friendly bilingual private guides. Please browse our detailed itinerary for more information.
