Explore Japan's three main islands and experience one of Japan's most beautiful festivals: the Takayama Sanno Spring Festival.

Take pleasure in visiting one of Japan’s three most beautiful festivals, the Takayama Festival, which is held twice a year during spring and autumn. This tour lets you experience the Takayama Spring Festival (Sanno Festival) while enjoying cherry blossoms in full bloom, as well as an in-depth exploration of Japan's three main islands.

Like our other "Japan In Depth" itineraries, this comprehensive tour is designed for people who wish to see the less frequented parts of Japan, as well as the more popular sights in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hiroshima. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to visit the remote Japanese Alps area in Takayama. We will explore Japan's three main islands by visiting noteworthy destinations on Kyushu, Honshu, and Shikoku Island.

Beginning in Saga, we will first visit the Mifuneyama Rakuen, a large garden famous for its azaleas and cherry blossoms. Continue to Nagasaki and visit Glover Gardens with its romantic turn of the century houses, Nagasaki Peace Park, Oura Catholic Church, and Dejima, a former district reserved for Dutch traders. Spend time in the legendary town of Takachiho and enjoy spectacular views of the Takachiho Gorge. In Beppu, view the “hells” of Jigoku, which are bubbling hot springs and geysers scattered across the town. Afterwards, make your way to the Mt. Takasaki Monkey Park, where you can interact with some of the park's 1,500 Japanese monkeys. You will also visit a beautifully preserved samurai district and ride a Shinkansen bullet train for experience.

Travel to Hiroshima for an eye-opening experience at Peace Memorial Park. Take a short ferry ride to Miyajima Island, where you can view the famed vermilion torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine. Drive through the Shimanami Kaido, a 60 kilometer long toll road that connects Japan's main island of Honshu to the island of Shikoku, passing over six small islands. Stroll through a pleasant air museum, visit Ritsurin Park, and then cross the Seto Ohashi Bridge back to the Honshu Island.

Visit a picturesque canal town and the brilliant Himeji Castle. In Nara, appreciate the intricate architecture and towering monuments of Todaiji Temple, including the Great Buddha statue. Then, spend time at a deer park where over 1,000 Sika deer freely roam. Our group will also spend two days in Kyoto, where we have hand selected the best temples, shrines, and parks to see cherry blossoms. Outside of Kyoto, tour through a charming bamboo forest and the traditional Zen garden of Tenryuji Temple in Arashiyama.

Go back in time by visiting the quaint village of Shirakawa-go and the beautifully preserved old town of Takayama. Here, you will get to experience the Takayama Sanno Spring Festival at night, where ornate floats are lit with traditional lanterns and are escorted around the city by people dressed in traditional costumes. Afterwards, enjoy the town’s morning market and the continuing festive atmosphere.

Experience a scenic ropeway ride over Hakone and Owakudani, and then gaze upon Japan’s famous Mt. Fuji. You will also have the opportunity to experience a green tea ceremony, meet a maiko (apprentice geisha), enjoy a traditional Yokagura Dance Performance, learn how to make sushi with a professional chef, and taste the world famous Wagyu beef in Kobe. End your tour in Tokyo, where you will visit the city’s modern attractions, historical monuments, and lively entertainment districts.
