The Discover Japan Tour with Jidai Festival offers a must- see look through the ages at Kyoto history and traditional culture, plus sights and activities at must-see Japan destinations to delight every traveler.

Discover the history and traditional culture of Japan over a thousand years past during the Discover Japan Group Tour featuring Kyoto’s Jidai Festival. The Jidai Festival, or “Festival of Ages”, proudly displays the history of Kyoto as Japan’s capital for over a thousand years, and celebrates the legacy of the city as the center of traditional Japanese culture. The tour includes the festival’s main event: an long procession going from the old Imperial Palace to Heian Shrine, in which the participants in the parade are dressed up in colorful historic costumes that reflect each of the time periods, from the Meiji Restoration (1868) back to the Heian Period (794). The parade is the highlight of our Discover Japan group tour itinerary, which includes cultural delights in Tokyo, Mount Fuji, Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka, with the addition of stunning natural beauty in Yudanaka and the Old Nakasendo Road for an authentic cultural Japan tour experience.

The tour begins in Tokyo and includes Tsukiji Outer Market, the Imperial Palace, a Sushi-Making Experience, Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, Shibuya Crossing, Tokyo Skytree, and Asakusa Sensoji Temple, plus a half- day to explore Tokyo on your own. We go from there to the Fuji Five Lakes area to find exceptional views of Mount Fuji at Arakurayama Sengen Park and Lake Kawaguchi, plus a look at the Kubota Itchiku Art Museum’s dyed silk kimono. We then travel to Matsumoto, from which we visit the adorable snow monkeys in the mountains of Yudanaka, the Hokusai Museum in Obuse, and the Kiso Valley. In this enchanting valley, we walk the Old Nakasendo Road from Magome to Tsumago, which includes old-fashioned Japanese towns and beautiful landscapes. Check our itinerary for the different options we offer when walking the Nakasendo. We finally arrive in Kyoto to see the magnificent Jidai Festival procession, which is a who’s-who of Japanese historical figures, including Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Sakamoto Ryoma, Saigo Takamori, Tomoe Gozen, and Murasaki Shikibu. You will be able to see Kyoto locals dressed up as samurai, merchants, artisans, courtiers, fishermen, and other groups across the spectrum of social classes. We also make time to see the Arashiyama District, the Golden Pavilion, Fushimi Inari Shrine and Fushimi Sake District, and the Gion Geisha District, which includes a Geisha Dinner Experience. After briefly stopping in Nara to see Todaiji Temple and meet the wild deer, the tour finishes in Osaka with a visit to Osaka Castle and teamLab Botanical Garden Osaka, and a tour of Dotonbori Street Food.

Our Discover Japan Tours with Jidai Festival offer transportation via private coach, with a few public transit days and a ride on a bullet train), plus deluxe hotel accommodations (one Japanese-style accommodation), breakfast everyday and other meals as listed, and accompaniment by one of our friendly, professional English-speaking guides.
