Explore the culture, history, and natural splendor of Hokkaido and Beyond on AJT's Autumn Leaves and Salmon Run Tour, which features the salmon run of Chitose and spectacular autumn colors on Hokkaido and Beyond Tokyo.

Our Hokkaido and Beyond Autumn Leaves and Salmon Run itinerary pairs our Charms of Hokkaido itinerary with our Beyond Tokyo itinerary for a 13-day Autumn Leaves Tour that includes both the incredible beauty of the island of Hokkaido, the Salmon Run in Chitose, and the cultural wonders outside Tokyo during the splendid Autumn Leaves season.

The tour begins in Chitose, enjoying the city’s “salmon culture” - the Salmon Hometown Chitose Aquarium and the Salmon Run, where the local Pacific Salmon can be seen struggling upriver to make it back to their spawning grounds. The sheer volume of salmon swimming in the river is an amazing sight! We go from there to Shiraoi to explore the different parts of Ainu culture, before continuing on to Sapporo. We spend the next day and a half sightseeing in Hokkaido’s capital, enjoying the local culture in fascinating locations like the Historical Village of Hokkaido, Hokkaido Shrine, Odori Park, and Susukino. We enjoy the view from Okurayama Ski Jump Observatory and take a tour of the Sapporo Beer Museum before we move on to Otaru. The port city of Otaru is known for its fishing and glass-blowing industries, and we tour its most important heritage sites such as the beautiful Otaru Canal and Sakaimachi Street; we even make time to enjoy the local sushi in the Otaru Sushi District. Then we head to the Shiretoko Peninsula - especially pretty in the autumn leaves season, and protected as a Natural UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the way, we stop at Asahikawa for a tour of Otokoyama Sake Brewery and a taste of Asahikawa Ramen, followed by a stop in Sounkyo to see the spectacular Ginga and Ryusei Waterfalls, a visit to a fox farm in Kitami, and a tour of the old Abashiri Prison. Once we arrive at the Shiretoko Peninsula, we take a cruise around it to hopefully see the local Ussuri Brown Bear, and take in views of Oshinkoshin Waterfall. After, we travel to the Akan-Mashu National Park, which also looks lovely in autumn, to see Lake Mashu - one of the clearest lakes in the country, and the Ainu Kotan (or village), sitting on the shores of Lake Akan. Enjoy a cruise of beautiful Lake Akan before going on to Kushiro, home of the beautiful Red-Crowned Crane, where we enjoy views of these incredible birds and their habitat. From there, we transfer to Tokyo, going immediately outside the big city to visit the impressive heritage sites and gorgeous landscapes of Nikko - Toshogu Shrine, Rinnoji Temple, Lake Chuzenji, and Kegon Falls - all stunning in autumn colors. We drive from there to Karuizawa by way of Takasaki, where you can try your hand at painting your own Daruma Doll at Shorinzan Daruma Temple. At Karuizawa, appreciate the inspiring architecture of the Stone Church and the thought-provoking works at the Karuizawa Museum of Contemporary Art, then continue to Yudanaka to watch the curious Snow Monkeys play. We make a brief visit to Matsumoto to view its impressive castle before taking an express train back to Tokyo and the end of the tour.

Join our Hokkaido and Beyond: Autumn Leaves and Salmon Run Tour for a tour of the culture, history, and wild beauty of Hokkaido and the Sapporo Autumn Fest, then connect a brief tour to Nikko and other historic destinations beyond Tokyo. Transportation for the tour is facilitated by our comfortable and convenient private coaches, with deluxe hotels, meals as listed in the itinerary, and guided assistance by one of our friendly, professional English-speaking tour guides.
