Exploring Japan's three main islands: Honshu, Shikoku, & Kyushu...plus enjoy the Obara Shikizakura Festival, where fall foliage and cherry blossoms appear at the same time.

Colorful autumn leaves, known as koyo in Japanese, draw just as many visitors in autumn as the cherry blossoms do during spring time. The viewing of autumn leaves has been a popular activity in Japan for centuries. Today, travelers journey all over the country to find the best spots for viewing the stunning blend of yellow, orange, and red leaves. On this tour, we will take you to visit places that are well known in Japan as the "best places to view autumn leaves", as well as enjoy the coveted sight of cherry blossoms against a backdrop of autumn leaves at the Obara Shikizakura Festival. At Obara, unique cherry trees called Shikizakura bloom twice a year: once in spring, and again just as the autumn leaves are at their best.

Like our other "Japan In Depth" itineraries, this comprehensive tour is designed for people who want to see the undiscovered regions of Japan, as well as the more popular sights in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hiroshima plus an opportunity to visit the Japanese Alps regions - Takayama. In addition, you will also visit Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa on this tour. We will explore Japan's three main islands by visiting places in Honshu Island such as Tokyo, Mt Fuji, Takayama, Kanazawa, Kyoto, Himeji and Kurashiki, cross the inland sea to Shikoku Island (Takamatsu), drive through the Shimanami kaido to back to Honshu Island to visit Hiroshima, then take a ride on the top speed Shinkansen bullet train to Kyushu Island to visit Beppu, Takachiho, Kumamoto, Nagasaki, and finish in Fukuoka.

The tour includes Tokyo's modern attractions, popular gardens in Takamatsu, as well as Kyoto’s famous temples and shrines. You'll get the opportunity to experience a traditional green tea ceremony hosted by an apprentice geisha (maiko), learn how to make sushi with a professional sushi chef, enjoy a traditional Yokagura Dance Performance in Takachiho, relax in the hot springs (onsen), ride a shinkansen bullet train, and taste the world famous Wagyu beef in Fukuoka.

We will also visit Fuji-Hakone National Park, a majestic castle in Himeji, and the Peace Memorial Museum and Park at Hiroshima. At Miyajima, you can view the famed vermilion Torii Gate of Itsukushima Shrine. At high tide, the gates look like they're floating on the sea. At Nara, be inspired by the intricate architect and towering monuments, including the Great Buddha statue, and you'll understand why this city is considered the birthplace of Buddhism in Japan. We will also take you back in time with visits to the charming village of Shirakawa-go and the beautifully preserved old town of Takayama, and stroll the beautiful Kenrokuen Garden in Kanazawa and see what six attributes make a perfect landscape.

In Nagasaki we will visit Nagasaki Peace Park, Dejima, Glover Gardens with its romantic turn of the century houses, and Oura Catholic Church, the oldest standing Christian church in Japan. Visit Takachiho, a place of myths and legends. In Beppu, we will view the Jigoku "hell" pools of bubbling waters and geysers scattered across the town. Next, we will enjoy a scenic drive to Mt. Takasaki Monkey Park where you can interact with some of the park’s 1,500 Japanese monkeys. Kitsuki Samurai Districts will also be included in this tour.

This itinerary is perfect for those who want to see the main cities but also explore a little deeper into rural Japan.
