The Super Grand Tour of Japan (Reverse) - Takayama Autumn Festival and Autumn Leaves Tour is a comprehensive tour through the entire country of Japan, carefully planned to enjoy the Takayama Autumn Festival and the fall foliage.

Book our Super Grand Tour of Japan (Reverse): Takayama Autumn Festival and Autumn Leaves, for an incredible spring itinerary visits each of the four major islands of Japan, plus 6 days exploring Okinawa Island. The trip is carefully planned to enjoy the Takayama Autumn Festival and brilliant autumn colors of Japan.

We start the tour on Okinawa Island visiting the Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters, then attend an Okinawa Cooking Class featuring the native Okinawan longevity foods, and tour an awamori distillery, which makes the local liquor. We walk the international Kokusaidori Shopping street and browse the foods at Makishi Public Market. We visit the Sefa-Utaki religious site before traveling to Okinawa World to walk through the spectacular Gyokusendo Cave. We then admire the beauty of the Peace Memorial Park and study the tragic story of the Himeyuri girls at a local museum. In the evening, we attend a traditional Ryukyu Dance and Okinawan Dinner Show. We then explore the ancient Ryukyu sites at Tamaudun Mausoleum and Shuri Castle before admiring the lovely flora at the Southeast Botanical Gardens. We then shop for souvenirs at Mihama American Village. On the last day, we take a trip to Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium - considered one of the best aquariums in Japan. Then we explore Nakijin Castle Ruins and a drive across scenic Kouri Bridge.

The tour continues from there to the main islands, beginning with a tour of Nagasaki at historic locations that include the Nagasaki Peace Park, Dejima, Oura Church and Glover Garden. We transfer to the town of Takachiho, where we explore Shinto religious sites such as Amano Iwato Shrine and Amano Yasukawara Cave. We also attend and evening Yokagura performance, which tells stories of the Shinto pantheon in dramatic fashion. The tour proceeds towards Hiroshima, stopping to see the Hells of Beppu, Mt. Takasaki Monkey Park, and the Kitsuki Samurai District. In Hiroshima, we see the Peace Park and Museum, then go to Miyajima to see Itsukushima Shrine. Then we take the Shimanami Kaido across the Seto Inland Sea to Shikoku to see Takamatsu’s Ritsurin Park and Shikoku Mura Village. We go from there to the ancient city of Kyoto, taking time along the way to visit magnificent Himeji Castle, the Kurashiki Canals, and the wild deer outside Nara’s Todaiji Temple. In Kyoto, we tour the city’s most unmissable historic sites, including Fushimi Inari Shrine, the Golden Pavilion, Kiyomizu Temple, and the Gion Geisha District. We then make our way through the Japan Alps, stopping in Kanazawa to stroll Kenrokuen Garden, see UNESCO World Heritage Site Shirakawa-go, and enjoy the spectacular floats on parade during the Takayama Autumn Festival. While there, we explore Takayama Old Town and browse the Morning Market. We then spend some time in Hakone to see breathtaking Mount Fuji and ride the Hakone Ropeway to Owakudani. Then we go to Tokyo to visit sites including Shibuya Crossing and Hachiko the Dog, Tsukiji Outer Market, Asakusa Sensoji Temple, and Tokyo SkyTree. We even include a free day for you to explore as you like. The tour continues to Nikko, to see beautiful Toshogu Shrine and Futarasan-Shrine, then visit beautiful Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls, bright with autumn colors. We go on to enjoy a cruise through breathtaking Matsushima Bay, which is considered one of the “Three Views of Japan'' (especially in autumn), and browse the seafood of Matsushima Fish Market. In Hiraizumi, we explore the captivating Chusonji Temple complex, see the ruins of Morioka Castle, enjoy the autumn leaves at Oirase Gorge, and see the Nebuta floats in Aomori.

Finally, we travel to the island of Hokkaido via Undersea Train, arriving in Hakodate, where we visit the Morning Market, Fort Goryokaku, and Mount Hakodate Ropeway, then stop to see Lake Toya and Noboribetsu’s “Hell Valley”. In Sapporo, we visit the Historical Village of Hokkaido, the Sapporo Beer Museum, Odori Park, and Susukino, and make time to tour the Otaru Canal and Sakaimachi Street in the city of Otaru before the tour ends.
