Takeda Castle

Takeda Castle

Takeda Castle is located in Asago city in the northern part of Hyogo Prefecture. The castle was left in ruins, but is known as the Machu Picchu of Japan or Castle in the Sky.

Takeda Castle is known as the Machu Picchu of japan or Castle in the Sky. It is called the Castle in the Sky because during the autumn season in the early morning a fog covers the area and the castle ruins sits above the mist. Takeda Castle is located in the norther part of Hyogo Prefecture in the city of Asago. It is also listed as one of Japan’s top 100 castles. The castle was built on top of a mountain and is situated 353 meters above sea level. Even though there are no buildings or towers left the ruins are still worth a visit especially for the view.

Takeda Castle was built in the 15th century by Otagaki Mitsukage of the Yamana clan, who later became the lord of the structure. Then in 1577 the castle was conquered by Hideyoshi Toyotomi during the Tajima Province campaign. Akamatsu Hirohide was the last lord of the castle and fought in the Battle of Sekigahara on the side of Tokugawa Ieyasu. After fighting in the battle he was accused of arson and committed seppuku. Since then Takeda was abandoned and all that remains are the stone walls.
