Japan Walking Tours

Japan Walking Tours

Best Japan Small Group Guided Walking Tours. We go off the beaten path, as well as the popular walking tour destinations like Kumamo Kodo and Nakasendo Trail.

AJT’s Japan Small Group Guided Walking Tours are for travelers looking to experience the natural beauty and ancient history of Japan through established walking routes and hiking trails. We go off the beaten path, up north to the less- touristed routes in the Tohoku and Hokkaido regions, and south to explore the volcanoes of Kyushu. Our Japan small group guided walking tours offer itineraries from an energetic walk along the paved and cobbled Nakasendo Trail to a more arduous trek on the mountainous Kumano Kodo Trail. We have the best walking tour itineraries for experienced adult travelers as well as families with kids, and the groups are kept small with a 13-passenger limit. This smaller size allows for greater camaraderie, joining the tour as fellow travelers and finishing it as friends. The tours are led by a full-time bilingual guide with a passion for Japan and Japanese culture.

Well-established hiking and walking routes have crossed Japan for centuries. In the Edo period, trade roads such as the Nakasendo connected Kyoto with the fishing town of Edo (now called Tokyo). Merchants and government officials walked these civil service roads, stopping in small villages along the way to rest. Guests on our Walking tour itineraries will have their own small-town Japan experience with a stay at a local Minshuku - a family-operated bed-and- breakfast offering homegrown Japanese hospitality. Hiking trails may also include a stop at an onsen hot spring bath, where tired travelers go to relax after a nice day of hiking.

Hiking through nature is a spiritual activity to the Japanese, and often symbolic of the road to enlightenment. These pilgrimage routes take you up and down mountains as you cut through dense woodland, stone-strewn paths to reach ancient Buddhist temples or Shinto shrines. Hiking the Kumano Kodo is a path trod by emperors, and calls to every adventurous spirit to trek to the three main temples of the area, collectively known as the Kumano Sanzan. A hiking trail in the southern island of Shikoku takes you into all four prefectures, and includes a stay in a temple on Mount Koya. These hikes are a mystical experience, blending each glorious trek through Japan's natural splendor into a search for spiritual meaning as you indulge your spirit of adventure on a Japan Walking Tour.
