Experience the heart pounding excitement of the Tenjin Festival in Osaka during our Discover Japan Tenjin Festival Tours, which includes the delights of Tokyo, Kyoto, Yudanaka, the Nakasendo Road, Nara, and Mount Fuji.

Discover Japan, especially the city of Osaka, in a new and authentic way during a Discover Japan Tour with Tenjin Festival. The Tenjin Festival is a festival based around Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, which enshrines Tenjin - the Shinto kami (deity) also known as Sugawara Michizane, who is their god of learning and scholarship. The highlight of the festival is the river boat procession which includes traditional entertainment like kabuki, bunraku puppeteering, and geisha, plus a fireworks display over the river at night. This spectacular festival is the main event of an itinerary that includes sightseeing and immersive activities in Japan's top destinations: Tokyo, Mount Fuji, Yudanaka (Nagano), the Old Nakasendo Road, Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka.

Discover Japan begins in Tokyo, experiencing the delights of one of the world’s largest cities by visiting some of its top locations - Tsukiji Outer Market, the Imperial Palace, Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, Shibuya Crossing, Tokyo Skytree, and Asakusa Sensoji Temple. Experience a fun Sushi-Making activity, and enjoy a half- day of free time to explore on your own. We stop in the Fuji Five Lakes area for views of Mount Fuji at Arakurayama Sengen Park and Lake Kawaguchi, and a chance to admire the beautiful silk dyeing technique of Itchiku Kubota at a local museum, before going to Matsumoto, which serves as our gateway to Yudanaka, Obuse, and the Kiso Valley. At Yudanaka, we enjoy the company of the adorable Snow Monkeys, then go to Obuse to study the artworks of Edo period artist Hokusai. The next day features a hike through the enchanting Kiso Valley from Magome to Tsumago along the Old Nakasendo Road, on a route which includes old-fashioned small towns and beautiful countryside. The tour continues to Kyoto where we tour its most beautiful locations including Kiyomizu Temple, the Golden Pavilion, Fushimi Inari Shrine (plus the Fushimi Sake District), Arashiyama, Tenryuji Temple, and the Gion Geisha District - featuring a dinner with real Geisha entertainment. We stop briefly in Nara to see Todai-ji Temple and meet the wild deer before ending the tour with two days in Osaka. On the first day, we visit Osaka Castle, teamLab Botanical Garden Osaka, and Dotonbori (which includes a Street Food Tour). The final day of the tour is the anticipated Tenjin Festival, with its thrilling, charged atmosphere, traditional entertainment (like bunraku, kabuki, and geisha), and floating procession of boats along the Okawa River - the centerpiece of the evening fireworks display.

Our Discover Japan Tenjin Festival Tours offer transportation via private coach, with a few public transit days and a ride on a bullet train, plus deluxe hotel accommodations (one Japanese-style accommodation), breakfast everyday and other meals as listed, and accompaniment by one of our friendly, professional English-speaking guides.
