Discover the incredible nature and rare wildlife of Hokkaido with a tour some of the island's most beautiful nature destinations, including Kushiro, Lake Kussharo, and the Shiretoko Peninsula. Capture memorable pictures of the red- crowned crane, Blakiston's Fish Owl, Steller's Sea Eagl

Embark on an enjoyable journey through Japan's own winter wonderland of Hokkaido - one of the best places in Japan for birding and wildlife photography. The journey begins in Tsurui, home of the rare red- crowned crane, known locally as "Tancho". These dainty birds, with their downy white feathers, slender necks and of course, deep crimson caps are among the most coveted by nature-loving photographers, and this tour takes you to the very best places to enjoy these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Our tour includes winter photo opportunities at Tsurumidai, Otawa Bridge, and Tsurui Ito Tancho Crane Sanctuary, which present the ideal photo opportunity. Next, we travel to Lake Kussharo, one of the world's largest caldera lakes. Because of the volcanic nature of the landscape, much of the lake doesn't freeze, and offers the perfect winter nesting ground for the breathtaking whooper swan. You can photograph hundreds of these gorgeous birds atop the winter ice and snow - their feathers blending in with the winter background. Then we travel to Rausu and the Shiretoko Peninsula area. This breathtaking region is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and while we explore Rausu, where we can can view the incredible sea birds during a nature cruise of the area, including Blakiston's Fish Owl - sacred to the indigenous Ainu people as a divine guardian, Steller's Sea Eagle - one of the world's largest eagles and the colorful Harlequin Duck off the coast near Aidomari. While exploring the area, you can also take pictures of the local Ezo deer and Hokkaido Fox. Hokkaido is known for its broad diversiity of sea birds, and this tour includes three cruises to take excellent wildlife pictures.

This tour includes a private bilingual nature guide to help you through your Hokkaido journey, and transportation between destinations by private coach. Experience the one-of-a- kind wildlife and natural beauty of Hokkaido with AJT on our Hokkaido Winter Photography Tour.
