Thousands of Japanese Women Wish Their Husbands Would Just Die

Death Note. I’m not sure if you know about it. It originated from a comic book series about a brilliant young lad given a note with the power to kill anyone whose name is written in it. There are more rules to the use of it, but that’s not important here.

Recently, there’s a website called 旦那デスノート (loosely, “Death Note for Husbands”). Women wishing “to kill” their husbands sign in to the site to post their hatred of the life partner that they chose, and how they wish their husbands would just vanish from the face of the earth, be it from accidents or what not.

The early morning show yesterday introduced the site as having over 10,000 members and 50,000 page views a day. Apparently, that’s no longer true because after the broadcast, the site went down until this morning most likely due to capacity issues. Someone on Twitter suggested it probably was logging more than 500,000 page views a day resulting in the server crashing. The site came back up as I was writing this. The rule of this site though, is that all entries should be anonymous and not identify the husband in question, and one must be the actual spouse for this to work.

The TV actually got to interview the owner of the site why he came up with the concept for such a dark content. He said that when women complain about their partners to others, they don’t really want solutions; they just want someone to hear them, share them, and empathize with them. That was when he decided to create the site.

I’m not sure if this outlet of the wives’ angers can be a relief of stress for them or if the constant interaction with the idea of having their husbands die and the encouragement of so many other women sharing the same ideal would eventually lead them to carry out their thoughts. Marriage laws in Japan has changed quite a lot so perhaps they can consider granting or even imposing divorce to couples whose partner wants them dead before they actually are dead.
