Japan UNESCO World Heritage Tours

Japan UNESCO World Heritage Tours

Japan is fortunate to have 23 sites currently inscribed to the UNESCO World Heritage list, and we carefully craft our itineraries to give you the best opportunity of ticking off multiple sites from your UNESCO bucket list.

Since 1954, UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee has been cataloguing certain areas and landmarks of cultural or historic significance, conserving these important sites as humanity’s shared heritage. To the world traveler, they present a list of internationally acclaimed must-sees; each site is a new Wonder of the World. Many of the 23 inscribed properties located in Japan represent significant testaments to Japanese creative genius. Among the most popular are the Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama in the mountainous Gifu and Toyama prefectures. These villages are recognized for their Gassho-style farmhouses, with broad thatched roofs gently sloping together like hands folded in prayer. These farmhouses, some of which are over 250 years old, represent the traditional way of life unique to that area.

Certain sites are inscribed as undeniable turning points in history, and include monuments such as can be seen in Hiroshima. Here is the focal moment at which the world saw, for the first time, the true destructive horror of the atomic bomb. A second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki a few days later. Hiroshima offers the Genbaku Dome Peace Memorial as a fervent prayer that such a moment may never be seen again. Nagasaki has another UNESCO site with the Hidden Christian Sites, which present a clear statement of the enduring perseverance of the Japanese “Hidden Christians”, forged under religious persecution from the Tokugawa shogunate.

For environmental monuments, Japan possesses one of the most iconic and celebrated wonders of the natural world – Mount Fuji. This mountain is sacred to the people of Japan, and has been a place of artistic illumination and spiritual awakening for millennia. Other UNESCO sites of natural beauty include the rich coastal marine life of the Shiretoko Peninsula and the ancient Sugi Cedar trees at Yakushima. Our group tour itineraries offer a mix of cultural and natural sites for a balanced look at Japanese heritage, but our private tours can be focused to include whichever of Japan’s UNESCO sites are on your bucket list.
