Japan Pottery Tours

Japan Pottery Tours

Discover the history, local culture, and creative artistry behind Japanese pottery on one of our Japan Pottery Tours, which feature local pottery villages, galleries, and other top destinations.

Japan Pottery Tours take advantage of Japan's tradition of crafting fine pottery to see and study a selection of Japan's earthenware treasures. The history of Japanese pottery is ancient, going back thousands of years, evolving from crude unglazed stoneware to fine porcelain with artful and intricate designs. These styles evolved within Japanese “pottery villages”, which usually handed their secrets down through generations of master potters, who refined the styles of each area into what it is known for today. The pottery of Japan is richly prized for their exquisite craftsmanship, especially with pottery used in Japanese tea ceremonies, which developed its own traditions alongside Japanese pottery.

The styles of Japanese ceramics are varied and distinct, and our Japan Pottery Tours take you to learn about a comprehensive group of designs such as Bizen-ware, Mikawachi-ware, Hasami-ware, Satsuma- ware and Kutani-ware. Explore traditional Japan pottery towns across the country - Toho Village, Sasebo, Hasami, Arita, Karatsu, Bizen, Imbe, and Kyoto’s Kiyomizu district are famous for their pottery types. We take you to visit local kilns and ceramic artists’ workshops to learn about Japan's centuries-old processes for shaping, glazing, and firing the clay, often handed down exclusively within families and perfected through multiple generations. You will also have time to converse with some local potters and ceramics artists, to better understand each regional style. The itinerary includes visits to galleries that showcase historic pottery treasures, such as the Kawai Kanjiro Memorial Hall, the Arupino Showroom, and the Kyushu Ceramic Museum. Visitors will even have the chance to try Kintsugi technique, which is used to repair broken pottery with lacquer and gold dust. Of course, you will have the opportunity to purchase one-of-a-kind Japanese ceramics in your favorite styles.

But we feel visitors on our Japan Pottery Tours should see more of Japan than just pottery villages. So we round out the itineraries with historic sites and cultural experiences at destinations including Naoshima Island, Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto, Mount Fuji, and Tokyo, where you can discover the art, gardens, and history of Japan. Browse modern art museums on Naoshima Island, stroll through Kobe’s Chinatown, take in the view from the observation deck of Abeno Harukas in Osaka, taste delicious Wagyu Beef, discover some of Kyoto’s most important temples, shrines, and gardens, see Mount Fuji rising over Lake Kawaguchi (in clear weather), and enjoy a scenic cruise down the Sumida River from Asakusa to Hama Rikyu Garden in Tokyo. If you are interested in Japanese pottery or porcelain, or are otherwise interested in Japanese arts and culture, browse our Japan Pottery Tours.
